Declaring your crypto taxes in Brazil

2 min read

Crypto assets are taxable property in the eyes of the Receita Federal, and holding them comes with declaration duties. The good news: for most people, compliance boils down to a few minutes of organized record-keeping once a year. Here's the general shape of it. (This article reflects general experience, not personal tax advice β€” for your specific situation, talk to an accountant.)

Your holdings go in the annual return

In your annual income tax return, crypto holdings are declared in the "Bens e Direitos" (Assets and Rights) section. Each asset is listed with its acquisition cost β€” what you actually paid, in Reais β€” along with the purchase date and where it's held. If you bought DePix, your cost is simply the Reais you sent.

The monthly report for larger amounts

There's a second obligation most people never trigger: if you buy more than R$ 30,000 worth of crypto within a single month through foreign platforms or outside Brazilian providers β€” which includes transfers into your own self-custody wallet β€” a monthly declaration to the Receita Federal is due by the end of the following month. Most first-time buyers stay well below that threshold, but it's worth knowing before you make a bigger purchase.

When you sell

Profits from selling crypto can be taxable. The exact rates and thresholds depend on where the asset is held and have changed in recent years, so before a large sale, check the Receita Federal's current guidance or confirm with your accountant. What doesn't change: only a sale (or exchange for another asset) creates a taxable event β€” simply holding doesn't.

Records make it easy

Keep your Pix receipts, purchase confirmations, and the wallet address you received your assets at. With those on hand, the annual declaration takes minutes instead of becoming a Sunday-afternoon archaeology project. And if you're ever asked why platforms collect your data in the first place, see why KYC matters.
